2108035 9212858 PCTABS00014 In a concrete column (1) supporting an overhead load (13) and having a base end (3) resting on a surface (5), a process of strengthening the column (1) to increase its ability to withstand a typical physical loading accompanying an earthquake, involving the steps of defining a work area (15) about the surface (17) of the column (1) to which the strengthening is to be applied, the work area (15) defined by circumferential marginal edges (19, 21) arranged in spaced-apart relation; over-wrapping the work area (15) with at least one layer (41) of high-strength, stretchable fibers (41) wherein the fibers (41) are oriented at an angle to the vertical axis of the column (1); applying a coat (47) of hardenable material, having a modulus at least as great as that of the fibers (41) over the layer (41) of fibers (41) to form a hard outer shell (47) thereover; and, injecting a quantity of a hardenable, low-shrink liquid (75) under the layer (41) of fibers (41) and over the surface (17) of the work area (15) in an amount sufficient to cause the fibers (41) to undergo stretching from about 1/2 % to about 4 % of their elongation.
