ABSTRACT The invention is concerned with a process of joining thick-walled pieces of plastic material having high melt viscosities. The process of the invention comprises pressing the faces of the ends of the pieces of plastic material against one another to form a joint, heating the joint to a temperature of from 200 to 400°C while being held at such temperature, subjecting the joint to a three- axis pressure of at least 0.1 MPa for at least 10 minutes, and thereafter cooling the joint below 150°C and then ceasing to subject it to the three-axis pressure.
