ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Liquefaction of coal is accomplished chemically, without employing high temperature and high pressure, in a process in which granulated coal is first soaked in an aqueous solution of caustic soda removed from the caustic soda, dried and subsequently pulverized, then, the coal powder so obtained is mixed with an aqueous solution containing hydroxide and organic carboxylic acid under agitation; thereafter the mixture is kept still for sufficient time until the coal becomes susceptible to liquiefaction; finally, the mixture is heated at a temperature from 90°C to 150°C with further addition of water.
