ABSTRACT Novel esters of 9.alpha.-chloro-corticosteroids of the formula Image wherein Y is chlorine or OR1, R1 and R2 represent an acyl group of 2-6 carbon atoms or a benzoyl group and where R1 and R2 can be the same or different in the same molecule, and are prepared by reacting the respec- tive 9.beta.,11.beta.-epoxy compounds with hydrogen chloride. The novel esters are shown to be active as topical anti-inflammatories, with the 17-propionate 21-butyrate being significantly more active than betamethasone 17- valerate.
