A process for preparing a copolymer latex comprising emulsion polymerizing an aliphatic conjugated diene monomer and other monomer copolymerizable therewith in the presence of a cyclic unsaturated hydrocarbon having one unsaturated bond in a ring, in which, preferably a monomer mixture which does not contain the aliphatic conjugated diene monomer is added after the addition of a monomer mixture containing the aliphatic conjugated dime monomer, or a part of a chain transfer agent is added after the addition of the monomers. This copolymer latex is useful as an adhesive composition, a paper coating composition, an adhesive composition for back-sizing carpets, an adhesive composition for rock fiber materials. a paper coating composition for gravure printing, and a color developing composition for a pressure sensitive copying paper.
