Described is a method of preparing sulphate-containing basic poly(aluminium chloride) solutions. This is done by disinte- grating aluminium-containing salts with hydrochloric acid, filtering off the solid precipitate from the resultant suspension and evaporating down the residue-free solution to crystallize out AlCl3 x 6 H2O. The AlCl3 x 6 H2O obtained is then decomposed by heating at 150 to 200°C to give a solid basic aluminium chloride which is placed in aqueous sulphuric acid and dis- solved to form Al(OH)xCly(SO~)z. Finally, the basic aluminium chloride sulphate solution obtained is warmed for 1 to 3 hours at 40 to 70°C.
