ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: THe invention relates to a process of Producing an S03-containing Gas for Use in the Purification of an Exhaust Gas in an Electrostatic Precipitator. The process serves to produce an S03-containing gas by a combustion of sulfur in a furnace with combustion air fed by a blower. The resulting combustion gas has a high S02 content, which is catalytically oxidized to S03 in the presence of oxygen in a converter. The S03-containing gas is admixed to a water vapor- containing exhaust gas before the latter is purified in an electrostatic precipitator. The furnace is fed with sulfur in liquid form by a proportioning feeder and with the combustion air through an air heater. A control of the combustion condi- tions in the furnace and an adjustment of the optimum temperature for the reaction in the converter can be effected by a control of the sulfur rate, the rate and/or temperature of the com- bustion air or the rate of the cooling air admixed to the combustion gas. The temperature may be measured at the inlet or outlet of the converter.
