ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process is disclosed for reducing the calcium chloride content of an aqueous solution containing 220 to 320 g/l of magnesium chloride and more than 6% by weight of calcium chloride, based on the magnesium chloride. In the process, the aqueous solution is reacted with carbon dioxide and with MgO in the form of caustic magnesia or magnesium hydroxide, and the precipitated calcium carbonate is removed. The resulting solution contains 4 to 6% by weight of calcium chloride, based on the magnesium chloride and is suitable for use in the production of MgO by thermal decomposition, particularly by spray roasting.
