ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: In a continuous process of producing chlorine dioxide by the reaction of alkali metal chlorate with hydrochloric acid in a reactor, an air stream in conducted countercurrently to the liquid stream so that the concentration of the resulting chlorine dioxide in the gas is kept below 15 %. The efficiency of a process of this kind is increased in that the air stream introduced into the reactor is replaced at least in part by a chlorine gas stream. Chlorine gas is introduced at the rate at which chlorine is discharged in the form of chlorine dioxide.
