ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE : A process of producing copper sulfate solution in which metallic copper is dissolved in a liquor, which contains Cu2+ ions and S042- ions and which is treated with oxidizing agents consisting of oxygen-containing gases. According to the invention, the leaching of the metallic copper and the oxidizing treatment of the resulting liquor are effected in spaced apart stages and at least part of the oxidized liquor is recycled to the leaching stage for the metallic copper. The process of the invention has the advantage that metallic copper need no longer be directly contacted with oxygen because the overall reaction is divided into two spaced apart stages. For this reason the pro- cess is particularly valuable when used with starting materials which form bulk materials and/or are strangly contaminated with insoluble substances.
