ABSTRACT N-formylaspartic anhydride is produced by grinding solid aspartic acid into fine particles, whereby the particles have a size of 75 µm or less, and reacting the particles with formic acid and acetic anhydride, the amount of formic acid ranging from 1 to 1.5 moles and the amount of acetic anhydride ranging from 2 to 2.5 moles, each per mole of aspartic acid. According to the process of the present invention, N-formylaspartic acid can be produced in high yields using a small amount of formic acid in a short period of time.
