ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: A process of removing arsenic and/or antimony from substantially organic liquids which are formed by the carbo- nization of oil shale or during the upgrading of fossil fuels, such as the gasification, pyrolysis or hydrogenation of coal, comprising a heat treatment of said liquids under superatmospheric pressure and a subsequent removal of the solids, characterized in that the liquid which contains oil shale dust or coal dust and possibly also ash particles is subjected to a treatment under a total pressure of 30 to 160 bars and at a temperature of 250 to 450°C whereby elementary arsenic and/or antimony is caused to be deposit on the solids, and the deposited elementary arsenic and/or antimony is subsequently separated from the liquid jointly with the solids. The advantage offered by the invention resides particularly in that a simple process is is provided by which arsenic and/or antimony can be removed from substantially organic liquids formed by the carbonization of oil shale or coal or by the gasification of coal. Another advantage offered by the process according to the invention resides in that arsenic and/or antimony is removed even without an addition of extraneous hydrogen and particularly in the presence of a dehydrogenating catalyst. Under the hydrogenating conditions used within the scope of the invention there is no loss of carbon due to a cooling of oil.
