ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: The invention relates to a process for simulta- neously producing fuel gas and process heat from carbona- ceous materials containing sulfur and dust. In this process, the gasification of carbonaceous materials is carried out at a pressure of up to 5 bars and a temperature comprised between about 800 and 1100°C by a treatment with oxygen-containing gases in the presence of steam in a cir- culation fluidized bed defining a gasifying stage, and about 40 to 80% of the carbon contained in the starting carbona- ceous materials are thus reacted. Sulfur compounds are removed from the resulting gas in a fluidized state at a temperature comprises between about 800 and about 1000°C, and the gas is then cooled and subjected to dust collection. Finally, the gasification residue together with the by-pro- ducts which have become available in the purification of the gas are fed to another circulating fluidized bed defining a combustion stage, and the remaining combustible constitutent are burnt there with an oxygen excess of 5 to 40%. This pro- cess has a high flexibility regarding the conversion of the energy content of the starting material into fuel gas and process heat so that it permits a quick adaptation to the requirement for energy in a given form.
