A process of supplementing phosphatizing solutions for gener- ating phosphate coatings on surfaces of steel, zinc and/or aluminum employs basic compounds hardly soluble in water, to which biopolymer has been added for stabilizing purposes. The basic compounds preferably constitute oxides, hydroxides and/or carbonates of the metals zinc, manganese, nickel, co- balt, copper and/or magnesium. Particularly suited biopoly- mers are carbohydrates or polysaccharides such as starch, amylose, amylopectin, inulin, agar-agar and carboxymethylcel- lulose, which are used with a concentration of 0.1 to 5 wt-%.
