On décrit un procédé de pyrolyse thermique d'une charge contenant au moins 80 % d'éthane dans une zone de réaction comprenant une zone de chauffage et une zone de refroidissement subséquente à la zone de chauffage, caractérisé en ce qu'on opère en présence de vapeur d'eau dans les conditions suivantes: - température en sortie de la zone de chauffage comprise entre 880 °C et 960 °C, - temps de séjour de la charge dans la zone de chauffage compris entre 1005 et 3000 millisecondes ; la température et le temps de séjour étant choisis de telle façon que la conversion obtenue de la charge soit au moins égale à 80 % ; et on récupère un effluent contenant majoritairement l'éthylène. Application à la synthèse de polyéthylène.
