ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A pulp bleaching process is disclosed which includes treatment with chlorine, extraction with alkali and a final bleaching section which in turn may include a variety of bleaching stages. A number of washing steps are connected in series countercurrent from a washing step in the final bleaching section to the wash step of the first alkali extraction stage. Strongly polluted effluent from the wash step of the first alkali extraction stage is fed through a first column to remove organic pollutants from the effluent. A combined effluent from the chlorine bleaching stage and from the first column is fed through a second column to remove organic pollutants while chlorine ions present pass through and are discharged with the purified filtrate from the column to form the final wash liquor effluent of the series of counter- current washing steps.
