ABSTRACT A process for the recovery of bitumen from pond oil by breaking the aqueous pond oil emulsion with an aluminum poly- hydroxy polymer having a hydrolysis ratio (OH/Al) of from about 2 to about 2.2 or a combination of said polymer with a demulsifier, allowing the treated emulsion to stand until water released from the emulsion is coalesced and separating the bitumen.
