Process to prepare a water-white lubricating base oil having a saturates content of more than 90 wt%, a sulphur content of less than 0.03 wt% and a viscosity index of between 80-120 by subjecting a non-water-white hydrocarbon feed having a lower saturates content than the desired saturates content to a hydrogenation step, the hydrogenation step comprising contacting the feed with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst, wherein the contacting is performed in two steps: (a) contacting the hydrocarbon feed with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst at a temperature of above 300 ~C and at a WSHV of between 0.3 and 2 kg of oil per litre of catalyst per hour, and(b) contacting the intermediate product obtained in step (a) with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst at a temperature of below 280 ~C.
L'invention concerne un procédé permettant de préparer une huile de base lubrifiante incolore, présentant une teneur en composés saturés supérieure à 90 % en poids, une teneur en soufre inférieure à 0,03 % en poids et un indice de viscosité compris entre 80 et 120, en soumettant une charge d'hydrocarbures non incolore, présentant une teneur en composés saturés inférieure à celle recherchée, à une opération d'hydrogénation, qui consiste à mettre en contact ladite charge avec de l'hydrogène en présence d'un catalyseur d'hydrogénation. La mise en contact se déroule en deux étapes : (a) mise en contact de la charge d'hydrocarbures avec de l'hydrogène en présence d'un catalyseur d'hydrogénation à une température supérieure à 300 ·C et une vitesse spatiale comprise entre 0,3 et 2 kg d'huile par litre de catalyseur et par heure, et (b) mise en contact du produit intermédiaire obtenu au cours de l'étape (a) avec de l'hydrogène en présence d'un catalyseur d'hydrogénation à une température inférieure à 280 ·C.
