The present invention relates to a process for removing rare earth elements (RE) from spent nuclear fuel. The spent nuclear fuel is subjected to an oxidation step at a temperature of between about 200° to about 800 °C and a heating step at a temperature of between about 1000 °C to about 1600 °C. The process results in the segregation of the spent fuel into a rare earth-rich fluorite-type phase and a rare earth-poor U3O8 phase. The RE-rich fluorite type phase is separated from the RE-poor U3O8 phase by conventional separation techniques such as sieving, air classification, sedimentation and the like.
Procédé d'extraction de métaux des terres rares (TR) d'un combustible nucléaire épuisé. Le combustible nucléaire épuisé est soumis à une étape d'oxydation à une température comprise entre environ 200 DEG C et environ 800 DEG C, et à une étape de chauffage à une température comprise entre environ 1000 DEG C et environ 1600 DEG C. Ce procédé conduit à la séparation du combustible épuisé en une phase du type fluorite riche en terres rares et une phase d'U3O8 pauvre en terres rares. La phase du type fluorite riche en TR est séparée de la phase d'U3O8 pauvre en TR par des techniques de séparation classiques telles que le tamisage, la classification pneumatique, la sédimentation et autre.
