The invention provides processes for the neutralisation of bauxite refinery residue by treatment with water containing sufficient calcium and magnesium ions to react with substantially all of the hydroxide, carbonate, fluoride and oxalate ions present in the bauxite refinery residue, and for a time sufficient for the treated refinery residue to exhibit a reaction pH of less than 10.5. The invention also provides processes and compositions for the treatment of water contaminated with dissolved inorganic substances such as acids and/or metal ions, the processes involving at least one step of adding to the water a bauxite refinery residue which has been treated with water containing sufficient calcium and magnesium ions to react with substantially all of the hydroxide, carbonate, fluoride and oxalate ions present in the bauxite refinery residue, and for a time sufficient for the treated refinery residue to exhibit residue to exhibit a reaction pH of less than 10.5.

L'invention concerne des procédés de neutralisation des résidus de raffinage de bauxite par traitement avec de l'eau contenant suffisamment d'ions calcium et magnésium afin de réagir avec sensiblement tous les ions hydroxyde, carbonate, fluorure et oxalate présents dans les résidus de raffinage du bauxite, et pendant un laps de temps suffisant pour que les résidus de raffinage traités présentent un pH de réaction inférieur à 10,5. L'invention concerne aussi des procédés et des compositions de traitement d'eaux contaminées par des substances inorganiques dissolues, telles que des acides et/ou des ions métalliques. Ces procédés consistent au moins à ajouter de l'eau à des résidus de raffinage de bauxite qui ont été traités avec de l'eau contenant suffisamment d'ions calcium et magnésium afin de réagir avec sensiblement tous les ions hydroxyde, carbonate, fluorure et oxalate présents dans ces résidus, et pendant un laps de temps suffisant pour que les résidus de raffinage traités présentent un pH de réaction inférieur à 10,5.
