A controller (100) of a machine tool comprises an input section (1) for entering target profile data (1a) and workpiece profile data (1b); a data base (3) which stores machine data containing mechanical specifications of the machine tool (11) and/or tool data containing tool specifications of the tools provided on the machine tool (11); a predictor section (7) for predicting work load and/or an interference of a tool with a workpiece based on the data from the input section (1) and from the data base (3); and a path determination section (5) for generating a tool path and determining the machining conditions such as the spindle speed and feed rate of the machine tool (11) based on the data from the input section (1) and from the data base (3) as well as the results of prediction by the predictor section (7).
