ABSTRACT The invention is related to the processing of brines containing magnesium chloride in the presence of alkali metal chlorides. According to this process, the brines are treated by dioxane the thus formed precipitate is recovered and dioxane is separated from this precipitate in order to obtain solid magnesium chloride hydrate. This process allows in particular the recovery of magnesium chloride from carnallitic mother liquors or brines.
