ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A photopolymer layer which has been image wise exposed is processed by contacting the layer with a developer comprising a lactam to selectively remove the non-light struck areas of the layer. The developer may additionally include an acid, a wetting agent, an inert diluent and/or a conventional developer for the image-wise exposed polymer. Examples of preferred lactams are 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone, 1-butyl-2-pyrrolidinone, 1-cyclohexyl-2-pyrrolidinone, 2-pyrrolidinone, 1-vinyl-2- pyrrolidinone and .epsilon.-caprolactam. The developer is particularly useful for developing image-wise exposed photopolymer layers in the photomechanical production of lithographic printing plates.
