Apparatus for disposing of water, with particular applicability for disposing of water at a well site, wherein the water is produced from a well. The apparatus is formed from a tank, a support for the tank, a gas burner disposed under the tank and oriented to heat the bottom of the tank; and a gas line connected to the gas burner, the gas burner being supplied by gas from the well. The tank is preferably open topped, and the tank surrounded by an insulating shell. A method of disposing of water, for example at a well site, in which the water is contaminated with salts, the method comprising the steps of flowing the water into a tank; heating the tank from outside the tank until the water has evaporated from the tank, leaving a salt residue; removing the salt residue from the tank; and disposing of the salt residue.
