ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The production of codeine has been achieved from modified cell cultures derived from the plants Papaver somniferum L. or Papaver setigerum DC. The cell cultures have been constrained to produce cytodifferentiated polyploid cells which are coniderably larger than the normal non-differentiated cells. In the presence of these polyploid cells the production of codeine is realized.
