The present invention is directed to 4-chloro-2-fluoro-5- (pentyloxycarbonylmethyloxy)nitrobenzene of the formula (I): Image (I) and a process for its preparation. The compound of the formula (I) is suitable for use in the preparation of a corresponding aniline compound. The aniline compound, in turn, can be used to prepare N-[4-chloro-2-fluoro-5- (pentyloxycarbonylmethyloxy)phenyl]-3,4,5,6- tetrahydrophthalimide a known herbicide.
