ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In a method of operating an aluminum reduction cell to produce an aluminum-silicon alloy, wherein molten aluminum is produced in the cell, aluminum is tapped from the reduction cell during the operation. The tapped aluminum is alloyed with silicon outside the cell to produce a master alloy in molten condition, the master alloy having a higher silicon content than the desired product alloy condition. The master alloy in molten condition is charged to the cell to replace the tapped aluminum, in an amount sufficient to create a metal pad of the desired silicon content.
