ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION The inclusion of salts of rubidium or cesium or mixtures thereof in a catalyst comprised of copper and zinc oxides and optionally manganese oxide or manganese and cobalt oxides and a stabilizer such as chromic, ceric, mag- nesium or aluminum oxides results in higher yields of C1 to C6 alkanols and lower production of hydrocarbons in the effluent from the catalytic reaction environment. The re- actant gases passing over the catalyst comprises hydrogen and carbon monoxide and optionally carbon dioxide if eco- nomically advantageous.
