- ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Production of abrasive grade alpha-Al2O3 by hydrothermal treatment of chi-Al2O3 in the presence of catalytic amounts of acid and fine particles of certain metal oxides and/or alpha-Al2O3, drying, pressing, calcining, and sintering. The sintering is enhanced by use of particulate sintering additives added no later than the pressing step. The end product alpha-Al2O3 is over ninety five percent theoretical density and has a hardness of 16-22 GPa and submicron crystallite structure. STA 12
