A process for the preparation of anhydrous magnesium chloride containing acceptable amounts of MgO suitable for use in the electrolytic production of mangesium metal com- prises the steps of feeding spray-dried magnesium chloride powder, or a finely divided magnesite or magnesia feed to a furnace and heating the feed to a temperature of about 750- 850°C to melt it, and reacting the resulting melt with a carbonaceous reductant and chlorine which is introduced using a gas disperser consisting of a rotating vaned im- peller that creates small diameter gas bubbles and ensures that the fine particles present in the melt are evenly suspended.
