ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process is provided for the production of thermo- plastic aromatic polymers containing hydroxyl or thiol end- groups which comprises reacting a thermoplastic aromatic polymer containing alkali metal phenate, or thiophenate groups with at least one organic halide which undergoes elimination of both hydrogen and halogen atoms e.g. as hydrogen halide, rather tan substitution of the halide, under the reaction conditions employed.
