Abstract of the Disclosure A carbon source and zinc oxide are reacted to form a gaseous effluent comprising carbon monoxide and zinc. The zinc is removed from this gaseous effluent by condensation. The liquefied zinc is reevaporated, con- tacted with an oxidizing agent, and oxidized to zinc oxide which is introduced into the main reaction in contact with the carbon source. Preferably the liquid zinc is put into indirect heat exchange relationship with the gaseous effluent from the main reaction and/or into indirect heat exchange relation- ship with the zinc oxidizing reaction mixture.
