ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Method and apparatus are provided for the self- assembly of cigarettes by the consumer. A cigarette is assembled by repeatedly placing small quantities of tobacco into a preformed cigarette paper tube until the tube is filled with tobacco. This mode of assembly permits a significant degree of control to be exercised by the smoker over the firmness and density of the cigarette so produced. Assembly apparatus includes injection means for repeatedly transferring small quantities of tobacco from a feed stream into the preformed cigarette paper tube held in a holding means.
