ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In a procedure for dyeing a length of fabric by conveying the fabric in the direction of its length through a dye station where the fabric is impregnated with a quick-setting dye, the dye is caused to non-uniformly color the fabric with a generally longitudinal, randomly varying pattern effect, by causing the fabric to pass through the station in a longitudinally twisted state. In order to enhance the effect of this procedure, and in particular to vary the general nature of the color variation produced, the fabric is manipulated ahead of the dye station by periodically varying its degree of twist and/or degree of compression transverse to its length.
