Bayer 3579 LH:sl PRODUCTION OF FERRIMAGNETIC IRON OXIDE ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Thermally stabilized ferrimagnetic iron oxide with a coercive field strength of about 350 to 500 Oe which, upon incorporation into a magnetic tape, shows an improvement of at least 5 dB in the ratio of recording level at a frequency of 10 K c/s to background noise in relation to a standard reference tape, is produced by subjecting an iron (II) salt solution to precipitation and oxidation at a pH below 7 to produce acicular .alpha.-FeOOH, terminating the oxidation upon reaching a pH below 4, chemically stabilizing the .alpha.-FeOOH and dehydrating, tempering and reducing it to iron oxide.
