Disclosed is a process for producing fiber webs by the airlaid process of laying down the fibers and the pulverulent binder in an air stream, which includes a first step of laying a fiber web or fibers up to a basis weight of 10 to 50 g/m2, a subsequent step of laying down fibers and a thermoplastic polymer powder based on polymers of one or more monomers such as a vinyl ester or a (meth)acrylic ester separately or as a mixture in the air stream in an amount of 10 to 300 g/m2 and, if appropriate, repeating this step until the desired basis weight is obtained, and consolidating the fiber material at temperatures of. 80°C to 260°C and, if appropriate, at a pressure of up to 100 bar.
