ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention relates to the production of fibrous material e.g. stable monofilament or yarn, from a stretched sheet of melt-embossed cold drawable polymeric material e.g. polypropylene. The process involves melt embossing a sheet of the polymer by means of rollers having continuous circumferential grooves e.g. 10 to 300 grooves per inch, to form a flat material having parallel continuous ribs. The embossed sheet is then stretched in a direction parallel to the ribs so as to orient the polymer. Simultaneously or subsequent to the stretching the material between the ribs is split so as to form longitudinal filaments corresponding to the ribs. Splitting may be carried out by twisting the stretched material, passing through an air venturi or winding over grooved rollers, but preferably by applying a transverse stress. The split material in the form of a tape may then be twisted into yarn.
