A method of making an alloy of niobium that includes: A) forming a blend comprising niobium powder and a powder of a metal selected from the group consisting of yttrium, aluminum, hafnium, titanium, zirconium, thorium, lanthanum and cerium and pressing the blend to form pressed blend; B) attaching the pressed blend to an electrode comprising niobium; C) melting the electrode and pressed blend under vacuum arc remelting conditions, such that the blend mixes with the melted electrode; D) cooling the melted electrode to form an alloy ingot; and E) applying thermo-mechanical processing steps to the alloy ingot to form a wrought product. The method provides a fully recrystallized niobium wrought product with a grain size finer that ASTM 5, that can be used to make deep drawn cups and sputtering targets.

L'invention concerne un procédé de fabrication d'un alliage de niobium, qui comporte les étapes consistant à: A) former un mélange comprenant une poudre de niobium et un poudre d'un métal choisi dans le groupe constitué par l'yttrium, l'aluminium, le hafnium, le titane, le zirconium, le thorium, le lanthane et le cérium, et comprimer le mélange pour former un mélange comprimé; B) fixer le mélange comprimé à une électrode comprenant du niobium; C) faire fondre l'électrode et le mélange comprimé dans des conditions de refusion à l'arc sous vide afin que le mélange se mélange à l'électrode fondue; D) refroidir l'électrode fondue pour former un lingot d'alliage; et E) soumettre le lingot d'alliage à des étapes de traitement thermomécanique pour former un produit travaillé. Le procédé permet de fabriquer un produit de niobium travaillé entièrement recristallisé, dont la grosseur du grain est plus fine que la valeur ASTM 5 et qui peut être utilisé pour fabriquer des coupelles embouties et des cibles de pulvérisation.
