ABSTRACT A method for the production of HC1 comprises heating calcium chloride with a molar excess of SiO2 having a surface area of at least 15m2/gm at a tem- perature in excess of 600°C in the presence of water vapour, suitably in a fluidized bed reactor. Silica residues from acid processes, and calcium chloride waste, may advantageously be used. By-product CaSiO3 is also useful for thermal insulation.
