ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Production of hydrolysed polymaleic anhydride The invention provides a process for the production of hydrolysed polymaleic anhydride which comprises heating a reaction mixture comprising (a) maleic anhydride, (b) a reactive aromatic solvent, (c) an alcohol or glycol having up to 4 carbon atoms or esters of such an alcohol or glycol with maleic acid, and (d) di-tertiary butyl peroxide, and then hydrolysing the resulting polymer.
