A B S T R A C T This invention relates to novel intermediates for producing 1-oxacephams, namely 4-oxygenated butyric acid derivatives represented by the following formula: Image wherein R is an ester-forming group selected from the group consisting of C1 to C5 alkyl, C7 to C15 aralkyl, (mono- or di-)cyclic C6 to C12 aryl and C1 to C10 N-hydroxyamino compound; R2 is methylene, hydroxyimino- methylene, hydroxyiminomethylene protected by tri-C1 to C5 alkylsilyl or optionally cyclic 1-C1 to C5 alkoxy -C1 to C5 alkyl or diazomethylene; X is methylene, and y1 is hydroxy, protected hydroxy or a group of the formula: Image in which R1 is C1 to C10 alkyl, aralkyl or aryl optionally substituted by phenoxy, methyl, cyano, nitro, methoxy or chloro and Z is hydrogen, C1 to C5 alkanoyl or tri-C1 to C5 alkylsilyl and processes for their preparation.
