A method for the manufacture of ammonium nitrate and LDH containing nitrate as an interlayer anion, the method including the steps of: (1) providing a source of nitric acid (2) providing a source of ammonia; (3) reacting ammonia with nitric acid to produce ammonium nitrate; (4) preparing a nitrate containing a first metal by reacting a compound containing the first metal with nitric acid or ammonium nitrate; (5) either: (a) preparing a nitrate containing a second metal by: (i) contacting a compound containing the second metal with nitric acid; or (ii) contacting a compound containing the second metal with ammonium nitrate; or (b) providing a compound containing the second metal; and (6) mixing the nitrate containing the first metal from step (4) with the nitrate containing the second metal or the compound containing the second metal from step (5) and ammonium hydroxide to form the LDH containing nitrate as an interlayer anion and ammonium nitrate. The method can be integrated with existing ammonium nitrate plants.

Ledit procédé consiste à (1) fournir une source d'acide nitrique, (2) fournir une source d'ammoniac, (3) faire réagir l'ammoniac avec de l'acide nitrique pour produire du nitrate d'ammonium, (4) préparer un nitrate contenant un premier métal par réaction d'un composé renfermant le premier métal avec de l'acide citrique ou du nitrate d'ammonium, (5) (a) préparer un nitrate contenant un second métal par (i) mise en contact d'un composé renfermant le second métal avec de l'acide nitrique ou (ii) par mise en contact d'un composé renfermant le second métal avec du nitrate d'ammonium ou (b) fournir un composé contenant le second métal, et (6) mélanger le nitrate renfermant le premier métal de l'étape (4) avec le nitrate contenant le second métal ou le composé renfermant le second métal de l'étape (5) et l'ammoniaque afin de constituer le LDH qui renferme du nitrate en tant qu'anion de couche intermédiaire et du nitrate d'ammonium. Le procédé de cette invention peut être intégré dans des usines de nitrate d'ammonium existantes.
