PRODUCTION OF LIQUID SULFUR TRIOXIDE Abstract of the Disclosure A process for production of liquid sulfur trioxide in which sulfur is combusted with oxygen in one stage at a furnace outlet temperature of between about 1000°F and about 2700°F, and the resulting sulfur dioxide-containing gas is subjected to multi- stage catalytic conversion to sulfur trioxide, the sulfur trioxide being recovered by conventional con- densation techniques. Substantially all the uncondensed gases from the sulfur trioxide condensation step are recycled to the combustion step.
