ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for producing magnetite from ferrous sulphate or ferrous chloride solution includes heating the ferrous salt solution to a temperature above about 50°C., adding an ammonia compound to the solution to provide an ammonia to salt anion ratio of about the valency of the salt anion, and treating the solution with oxygen at a partial pressure in the range of from about 50 to about 170 kPa. The ammonia compound may be ammonia, ammonium hydroxide or ammonium carbonate.
