ABSTRACT Methanol is produced by passing a mixture of hydrogen and one or more carbon oxides into contact with a plurality of different catalysts which are contained in beds, the beds being arranged in series or assemblages, the beds of catalysts within a series or assemblage being operated at increasing temperature levels in the direction of flow of the mixture. The resulting gaseous mixture also containing metnanol is then cooled by indirect heat- exchange and passed into contact with at least one further bed of catalyst comprising a final assemblage.
