ABSTRACT A process for the production of micro-organisms in which a methane- utilising micro-organism which is a strain of Methylomonas is grown under aerobic conditions in a liquid growth medium comprising assimilable sources of nitrogen and essential mineral salts, in the presence of methane gas and in the presence of (a) one or more methanol- utilising micro-organisms which is/are capable of metabolising methanol produced by the growing methane-utilising micro-organism, and (b) one or more non-methylotrophic micro-organisms which is/are capable of metabolising organic substances produced by the methane and/or methanol- utilising micro-organisms.
