ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A continuous process for the production of monochloroacetyl chloride from trichlorethylene And/or 1,1,1,2-tetrachloroethane, accompanied if desired by monochloroacetic acid production. The process is character- ised by effecting a reaction for hydration of trichloroethylene and/or 1,1,1,2-tetrachloroethane under pressure of hydrogen chloride in the liquid phase, in the presence of ferric chloride partially in suspension. The pro- cess is particularly useful for producing monochloroacetyl chloride with a very good degree of selectivity.
