ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The reduction of powered substance by mill grinding in a slurry may utilize passivated iron balls. In the case of nuclear fuels containing primarily uranium material the neutral to acidic reaction of the slurry is countered by the use of lithium hydroxide or ammonium hydroxide, by means of which the condition of the balls appears stabilized, at least on a batch basis, and contamination of the ground product with iron may be effectively controlled. In addition, the viscosity of the slurry is significantly reduced using ammonium hydroxide as the pH correction factor.
