ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides a method of producing a packaging material web for use in producing packages to contain liquids, which comprises rolling the packaging material which includes at least one fibrous wicking layer into a storage roll with exposed edges of the web localized in a plane coincident with the sides of the roll and coating at least one side of the roll with an aqueous composition comprising a halometallic complex of the Werner type and a vinyl polymer having reactive groups for said complex, whereby said composition is wicked into said wicking layer at the exposed edges of the web, forming a liquid-tight impregnation. The packaging material web so obtained is suitable for the production of packaging containers particularly useful for aqueous or fatty materials.
