ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides a process for the production of p-cresol in a quantitative yield, which involves the acidification of an aqueous solution of 4-methylcylcohexa- 3,5-diene-1,2-diol-1-carboxylic acid under ambient conditions of temperature and pressure to cause spontaneous decomposition of the starting material to p-cresol.
